Shutdown Ubuntu using the terminal

This tutorial works in Ubunbu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Mate and other Ubuntu based distributions. The tutorial also works in Linux Mint and other Debian based distributions.

On the odd occasion Ubuntu or other Ubuntu based distribution fails to shutdown via the GUI, you can always issue the following command in the terminal.

sudo shutdown -h now
