For some reason the volume control disappeared from the panel in Xubuntu, and when I went to add the volume control again it had also disappeared from the plugins list.

To get your volume control back, open your terminal and enter following command

sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer

After installation, right click on your panel and select Add New Items, then select Volume Mixer from the list.
You should then be able to add the volume control back to your panel.

I also noticed that after restarting Xubuntu, my volume control had once again disappeared from the panel. This time it was available from the plugins, so I added it again.

I have since locked the panel to see if this resolves the problem.
