I love Google Maps for general browsing, getting directions and using street view before I travel, however if your looking for extra detail with your mapping then Open Street Map is excellent for showing everything Google Maps doesn't in standard view.
Open street map is free and community driven, allowing for quicker updates and showing superior detail in niche areas, for example I was interested in finding out about the 1880 channel tunnel attempt after watching IKS Exploration exploring the old tunnel on YouTube
For my international visitors, the channel tunnel is one the longest undersea tunnels in the world and links England to France. By driving you car on to the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service, you can get to France in only 35 minutes, compared to 90 minutes on the Ferry.
I wanted to see how far out the old 1880 tunnel attempt went out to sea before it was abandoned, and where it was in relation to the existing channel tunnel that was completed around 1994.
If you zoom in on the map below you can see that the 1880 attempt denoted by the white line. Interestingly when they started boring the current channel tunnel, they intercepted the old tunnel.
